Pray and read

Praise God for making himself known to us by his Son. Ask him to give you eyes that see, and a heart which responds with faith and thanksgiving.

 Read 1 Corinthians 3 and then re-read 1 Cor 3: 18 – 21

What does Paul warn the Corinthians against?

What do they need to become?

How does Paul describe God’s wisdom?

Paul tells the Corinthians that ‘All things are yours’.  What do you think he means by this?

Apply

Paul takes the Corinthian slogan, ‘I belong to Paul’ and ‘I belong to Apollos’, and flips it to assure the Corinthians that all things belong to them! He wants them to know that God has blessed them abundantly with good teachers and leaders who can build them up.

Not only that, but Paul says life, death, the present and the future belong to the Corinthians.  Paul is alluding to the raft of promises God has given to his people found throughout the bible about our hope now and for eternity.  Why?  Not because the Corinthians belong to Paul or Apollos but because they belong to Christ.

Paul knows that everyone belong to someone.  Who do you belong to?  Even as Christians, we can forget who we belong to and we start to act as those without the spirit, as mere humans.  Paul’s encouragement to the Corinthians should not be lost on us, we belong to Christ! Amen.

Pray

Ask God for help in remembering that you belong to Christ and what that means for your life

Thank God that the past, present and future are in his hands

Pray that God’s spirit will be at work drawing others to him who might also say ‘I belong to Christ’
