Truth to Power: Malachi Day 1

Pray and read

Praise God that he has been merciful and compassionate to you in his Son. Ask him to reveal himself to you in his word, convicting and strengthening your heart, that you might grow in faithfulness to him. Read Malachi 1:1-2:9.

How does the introduction of Malachi compare to the other minor prophets we’ve studied in this series (see Micah 1:1Joel 1:1Hosea 1:1)? What is similar? What is different?

Despite the lack of context given in the introduction to the prophecy, it is widely accepted that Malachi ministered after the return of Judah from exile in Babylon. The people of God are living in Jerusalem, worshipping him at the temple.

What is God’s complaint against the priests?

What seems to be the priest’s attitude toward God? What are they doing which reveals their attitude to him?

What is God’s warning to them through Malachi?

What expectation did the people of God have of their return to Jerusalem from exile (e.g. Isaiah 2:1-5)? What is the reality?

Reflect on your worship of the Lord (in all of life – see Romans 12:1-2). Is your worship of God according to his terms? Or your own? How might you worship him in the way he’s called us to as those who have died and been raised with Christ?

Praise God that he is worthy of all honour and glory and praise as the one in whom all things live and move and have their being. Ask him to reveal to you the ways in which you might reform your worship of him, that it would be pleasing to him.
