Acts: Week 2 Day 1
Pray and read
Praise God for making himself known to us by his Son. Ask him to give you eyes that see, and a heart which responds with faith and thanksgiving.
Acts 4 ends with a description of Christian community characterised by generosity and selflessness. Unfortunately, this story is a stark contrast to what we read in chapter 5.
What do you think was motivating Ananias and Sapphira? Why didn’t they just keep it all for themselves?
What two things does Paul accuse Ananias of doing? (v4)
What does Peter accuse Sapphira of doing? (v9)
Why do you think God punished Ananias and Saphira so severely?
Ananias and Sapphira wanted to have their cake and eat it too. They wanted to keep all the money for themselves but also wanted to appear generous to the rest of the church. Although wanting to keep the money for themselves was not ideal, lying to their church, to God and ‘test(ing) the Holy Spirit’ was far, far worse.
Genuine generosity to God and his people is a sign of a changed heart because only a changed heart genuinely wants to please God. Our service to God is a response to his work in our hearts made by possible by Jesus’ work on the cross.
How do you view your service to God?
Do you do it to save face or is it an outpouring of a grateful heart?
Thank the father for Jesus, who gave his all for us
Spend time thanking God for the good things in your life
Ask God to help you to give to him joyfully, whether that be time, money or talent.
