I AM Week 17: Day 2

Praise God for making himself known to us by his Son. Ask him to give you eyes that see, and a heart which responds with faith and thanksgiving.

Read John 21: 15 - 19

There is an ‘elephant in the room’ as Peter walks with Jesus.  What do you recall about Peter actions before Jesus’ death?  (read John 18:15 – 26)

Why do you think Jesus asked him three times?

What job does Jesus give Peter?  (v17)

What is the contrast between Peter’s past and future?  (v18 – 19)

Peter must have felt sick with guilt having to sit, eat and walk with Jesus after denying their relationship prior to Jesus’ death.  Peter would have been eager to make up for his mistake but Jesus simply asks for an affirmation of love before giving commissioning him for an enormous task.

Although we are not all going to play the role that Peter did in serving our Lord, there is a model here for Christian leadership. All of us, who serve Jesus in anyway, are first and foremost called to love and follow him. Jesus has done all the ‘making up’ for us on the cross. This we no longer have strive to make a mends and restore the relationship.

How does the knowledge of Jesus’ work on the cross free you up to serve him?

How do you maintain your love for Jesus?

Praise God that Jesus’ work on the cross means we don’t have to do anything to restore our relationship with the father.  We simply love, trust and follow his son.

Ask God for help in following Jesus and responding in living a life worthy of him.
