I AM Week 17: Day 3

Praise God for making himself known to us by his Son. Ask him to give you eyes that see, and a heart which responds with faith and thanksgiving.

Read John 21:20 - 23

Peter and Jesus have been walking along the shore the Sea of Galilee.  Jesus has forgiven Peter for his past mistakes and has commissioned him to ‘feed (his) sheep’.

Whom does Peter see walking behind him?

What do you think motivated Peter’s question in v21?

How does Jesus’ response help us understand what Peter was thinking?

How does Jesus adjust Peter’s mindset?  v22

Peter still seemed insecure about his role in Jesus’ plan for the world, especially after his failure around the time of Jesus’ trial.  Despite receiving Jesus’ forgiveness, he takes his eyes off his own situation and enquires about John’s.  Jesus’ gentle rebuke is a reminder for all of us that we are first and foremost to worry about our own path with God.  We don’t know the plans God has for others and focussing on perceived injustices and inequalities will only get in the way of us ‘following him’.

In what situations are you tempted to ask ‘what about him/her?’

How do you keep just ‘following him’?

Thank God for sending Jesus, and for the life available to us by his resurrection.

Ask God to help you be content with the life and work that he has given you

Ask God to help you to be a blessing to your brothers and sisters in Christ
