I AM Week 3: Day 3

Read: John 5:19-30

Yesterday we read Jesus’ response to the Jewish leaders who were outraged by his claim to divinity. Today and tomorrow we will consider his defence in two parts.

What comparisons does Jesus draw between what the Son and the Father do (vv. 19-22)?

How are the roles of the Son and Father related? What is their attitude towards one another? (Hint: Look at v. 20 & 30)

Yesterday we considered verse 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” According to Jesus, why are his words able to grant life (v. 26)?

The Son and the Father are not in competition, but are one in activity and honour due them. To honour Jesus is to glorify the Father. Read also Philippians 2:5-11.

Jesus, although equal with the Father, willingly submits to him. As God’s children we’re called to submit to Jesus. What areas of your life do you need to continue to surrender to him?

Are there patterns you would like to establish or continue in the new year to encourage you to keep your eyes fixed on Jesus?

·     Pray that as a church we would be convinced Jesus is the place to go to receive words of eternal life. Ask God to grant us creativity and courage to find ways to make the name of Jesus known in Perth.

·     Ask for God’s help and the working of the Spirit as you seek to honour the Son in specific areas of your life.
