Kings Week 14: Day 2

Pray and read

Praise God for revealing himself by his word, and ask him to help you hear and respond to it with repentance and faith by his Spirit at work in you. Read 2 King 18:17-37.

On arriving at the walls of Jerusalem, the field commander delivers a speech from the king of Assyria.

What is the strategy being deployed in his speech – In the way it’s delivered? In what he says? How does he cast doubt? What promises does he make?

How do the officials from Judah respond? How do the people of Judah respond?

The strategy of the king of Assyria is not unfamiliar to readers of the Bible. What similarities are there to the following passages? Genesis 3:1-5Luke 4:1-13.

In what circumstances are you tempted to doubt God’s goodness and sovereign care of you? What are you tempted to grasp for yourself, rather than trusting God to provide?

Give thanks to the Lord that he is good, and sovereign, and generous to us, especially in his Son.

Ask God to reveal to you areas of your life in which you are tempted to doubt him, that you might repent and renew your trust in him.
