Kings Week 13: Day 2
Pray and read
Ask God to give you insight into his Word as you reflect on today’s passage, and that this would lead to you to add to your faith: goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. (2 Tim 2:7, 2 Peter 1:5-7)
Read 2 Kings 15.
How do the kings of Israel compare with the kings of Judah?
What deal did King Menahem of Israel make with Assyria? Why?
Read 2 Kings 16.
What kind of king was Ahab? What are the marks against him?
What deal did he make with Assyria, which overruled the one Israel already had with them?
Why did he make the deal? How did he pay for it?
Does Ahaz ever seek the LORD’s counsel for the wars?
What was the purpose of the temple? Why is it wrong that Ahaz built a new altar, and moved the one that already existed?
What does Ahaz’s submission to the Assyrian king (16:18) indicate about his relationship with God?
Ahaz feared Israel and Aram more than the LORD, and chose to create and be faithful to an agreement with Assyria rather than being faithful to the LORD’s covenant and seeking his help.
Read Hebrews 3:1-6
Rather than taking apart God’s house, like Ahaz did to the temple, what has Jesus done?
How has Jesus been faithful to God?
What difference does it make that Jesus is faithful to God’s house, his people?
How does the passage call us to respond to Jesus? What would this look like?
Thank God for providing Jesus as the faithful one over his people.
Ask God’s Spirit to help us fix our thoughts on Jesus, and to hold firmly to our confidence in in him.
