Kings Week 11: Day 2

Plead with God to open your heart and reveal what he’s saying to you through the passage today, and for feet that are swift to obey.

Read and Explore

Read (and pay particular attention to Jezebel) 1 Kings 16:29-33, 18:1-4, 18:16-19, 19:1-2, 21:4-7, 21:11-16.

How would you describe Jezebel’s character? What were her desires, and how did she act on them?

In what ways was she against God?

Read 1 Kings 21:20-26; 2 Kings 9:6-10, 2 Kings 9:30-37

What did God’s judgement against Jezebel entail? Was this deserved?

Read 1 Thessalonians 2:13-16

What similarities and differences can you see between Jezebel and those who persecuted Jesus, the prophets and the apostles? What is their motivation?

There is persecution around the world today of those who speak God’s message of salvation. (For example Christmas attack on Pakistani church). How ought we respond as Christians to this persecution of preachers of the gospel? (see Romans 12:17-21) Why?

Thank God for sending his gospel to be proclaimed to us, so that we can come to know him.

Ask God for help to love our enemies.

Ask God to thwart the plans of those who persecute his people, and in his mercy, to bring them under Jesus’ kingship.
