Kings Week 6: Day 1
Pray and read
Ask God to illuminate his word by his Spirit, that you will hear what it says and respond with faith and thanksgiving. Read1 Kings 12:1-24.
Chapter 12 begins at Rehoboam’s inauguration as king of Israel in Shechem, having been handed the throne by his father Solomon. However, events don’t go to plan, as the people of Israel call Jeroboam to join them in bringing their complaints before Rehoboam, their new king.
What is the complaint the people of Israel bring to Rehoboam? What is Rehoboam’s initial reaction to their complaint?
Who does Rehoboam consult for advice? What advice does he receive from each group he consults?
When the people return to Rehoboam after three days, what response does he give to their initial complaint? Whose advice has he listened to? What is the result?
How does Rehoboam respond to the people’s rebellion against his rule? Is his response effective?
Read Matthew 11:28-30.
How does Jesus’ rule as compare to the rule of Solomon and his son Rehoboam?
What hope or encouragement or comfort might this truth be for you today? In sin? In grief or sadness? In difficulty?
Give thanks to God for the rule of his son, the Lord Jesus, whose burden is light.
Cast any anxieties on the Lord, asking him to give you rest.
