Kings Week 8: Day 3

Pray and read

Ask God to illuminate his word by his Spirit, that you will hear what it says and respond with faith and thanksgiving. Read 1 Kings 19:1-21.

What prompts Elijah’s journey into the wilderness? How would you describe his emotional state during his journey? Why is he feeling this way?

In his mercy, the LORD passes by Elijah on the mountain. What do you notice about the way in which the LORD reveals himself? (NB –the phrase translated ‘a gentle whisper’ is literally ‘the sound of soft silence’ in the Hebrew).

After the LORD’s presence passes by, the LORD repeats the question he asked Elijah in verse 9. What do you notice about Elijah’s response? What might it tell us about the revelation of the LORD which Elijah has just experienced?

There are other instances of God revealing himself on a mountain. Read Exodus 34:4-10and Luke 9:28-36. What do you notice about each of these instances? How are they similar? How are they different?

How has God revealed himself to us? What does the passage from Luke call Jesus’ disciples to do?

Thank God for revealing himself to us in Christ.

Ask God to help you listen to Jesus today.
