Kings Week 8: Day 2

Pray and read

Ask God to illuminate his word by his Spirit, that you will hear what it says and respond with faith and thanksgiving. Read 1 Kings 18:1-46.

When Elijah appears before Ahab for the second time, Ahab accuses him of being the troubler of Israel. How does Elijah respond? What problem does he identify in Israel?

At Elijah’s command, Ahab gathers all the prophets of Israel on Mount Carmel. What is Elijah’s challenge to the people? What test does he set up to prove his point?

What is revealed by Elijah’s test with regard to Baal? How does Elijah’s taunt of the people rub it in?

What is revealed about the LORD? How do the people respond?

Elijah charges the people with wavering between two opinions, or hedging their bets. Are you hedging your bets? Are you putting your trust in something other than the Lord God to provide your security, or satisfaction, or hope?

Ask God to reveal to you any false gods in which you have been placing your trust, and repent of them.

Praise God that he is not like any other god. He doesn’t sleep, or grow weary. He’s not too busy or preoccupied (or travelling!). But, he sustains our every breath.
