Kings Week 8: Day 1
Pray and read
Ask God to illuminate his word by his Spirit, that you will hear what it says and respond with faith and thanksgiving. Read 1 Kings 17:1-24.
In chapter 17 the narrator’s gaze shifts from the kings to the prophet, Elijah.
What is the state of Israel and her king as Elijah begins his ministry (you might like to read 16:29-34again to remind you).
What is Elijah’s prophecy to king Ahab? What has brought it about (read 1 Kings 8:35-36)?
Elijah leaves Israelite territory at God’s command, where a (Gentile) widow provides for him.
The widow and her son witness two extraordinary miracles performed by Elijah. How does the widow respond (see 17:24)? What is striking about her response, in light of the current state of Israel? What does her response tell us about the purpose of Elijah’s miracles?
In the Gospel accounts, Jesus performs a couple of miracles remarkably similar to those of Elijah in this chapter (see Luke 7:11-17and 9:10-17). What significance might we draw from those similarities? What response do Jesus’ miracles prompt?
What is your response to Jesus? Have you received his word with faith? If not, why not? Could you do that now? If you have received Jesus’ word with faith, how might you continue listening to him?
Ask God to give you a soft heart, to receive Jesus’ word with faith and thanksgiving.
