Kings Week 1: Day 1

Last year we spent time looking at the reigns of David and Saul in 1 and 2 Samuel.  We now return to Israel’s kings, this time in the books of 1 and 2 Kings.

Before we dive into these new books, it will be good to remind ourselves about the significance of David’s reign and the promises God gave to him and his family.

Read 2 Samuel 7:1-17

David wished to build God a ‘house to dwell in’ and this is God’s reply to David’s offer.

Write down the things God promises to David.

Write down the things that God promises to his offspring

What differences do you notice?

Although David was a very significant figure in Salvation history, he is nonetheless human and broken.

Read 2 Samuel 12:7 –13

What does God promise David as a punishment for his sin?

Read Matthew 1:1–16

There are probably a lot of names you don’t recognize but there should be 1 or 2 that stand out.  Matthew 1:6 shows us that Jesus is part if the Davidic line, he is one of David’s offspring.

Re-read 2 Samuel 1:12 – 17 and think about those promises in light of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.

What are some of the differences between the way David and Jesus lived and ruled?

  • Thank God that he always keeps his promises to his people
  • Thank God for his grace to us, evident in the life of David and personified in the life of Christ
  • Ask God for help to see Jesus as King and to submit to his rule over your life Day 2
