Week 7: Day 1

Pray and read

Ask God to give you a soft heart, that as you read his word you will understand it, and respond to it with repentance and faith. Read Matthew 26:31-35.

Having shared the Passover meal together, Jesus and his disciples go out to the Mount of Olives.

What does Jesus expect of his disciples in the night ahead? How might Jesus’ use of Scripture shed light on this expectation (you could read Zechariah 13-14).

Peter is particularly emphatic in his response. What does he say? How does he end up acting (see Matthew 26:69-75)

In verse 56, Jesus prediction is proven true. Why do you think Matthew draws attention to the disciples’ faithlessness on this night? What significance might it have in the passion narrative (the account of Jesus’ death)?

What hope does v32 give?

Even knowing his closest friends will abandon him, Jesus presses on toward the cross. Why? What hope does his faithfulness give us?

Thank God for Jesus’ faithfulness in going to his death on the cross, even in the face of his friends’ unfaithfulness.
