The Crown Week 11: Day 1

Read: 2 Sam 7:1-16

In Samuel chapter 6 David retrieves the ark of the covenant from the house of Abinadab the priest and takes it to the holy City of David. This event brings much celebration to David and to the people of Israel. The Ark remains to be housed inside a tent.

It was customary in that time for a conquering king to build a temple in honour of the god who had given them victory. The God of Israel however does not need David to build him a house, and He replies making clear He has a better plan.

What promises are given to David by God?

Read Genesis 12:1-3

Reflect on how Gods promises to Abraham are reaffirmed by God to King David. What are they? Are there any new promises from God?

What does David need to do to receive this promise from God?

The God of Israel replies to David by saying that it will be God and God alone who will build a house and promises to use David’s household (descendants) to establish a throne that will last forever. This is known as the Davidic Covenant.

Read Acts 13:22-25,32-35

How has the Davidic covenant of 2 Samuel 7 been fulfilled according to Paul?

It is easy to feel that we need to actin our own strength and power while not trusting God. Reflect on times when this is difficult.

Thank God for establishing an eternal King in Jesus

Pray for personal humility and trust in Gods’ work and not your own.
