Romans Week 3: Day 1
Pray and read
Praise God for revealing himself by his word, and ask him to help you hear and respond to it with repentance and faith by his Spirit at work in you. Read Romans 11:1-10.
Chapter 11 picks up mid-flow in Paul’s argument, begun in chapter 9, regarding the salvation of Israel.
Paul insists that God did not reject his people, Israel (despite the rejection of the gospel by many Israelites – see the argument so far in chps 9 - 10). How does he use himself as an evidence of that truth? How does he use the passage about Elijah as evidence (you might like to skim 1 Kings 18-19 to remind yourself of that story)?
How does God’s preservation of a remnant of Israel testify to his grace?
Verses 7-10 seem to say that earnest seeking righteousness achieves nothing, but only God’s election or hardening. What do you make of these verses? How might Paul’s argument before and after these verses help to make sense of them?
What do we see of God’s character in these verses?
What hope is there in the truth that salvation is only by God’s grace? How might it help you as you wrestle with sin today?
Thank God that he is gracious, calling people for himself because of his great love.
Ask God to give you ears to continue hearing that good news each day, and responding to him in faith, with thanksgiving.
